National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) represents 16 national and 25 local and regional newspapers in Ireland. We represent our member newspapers on a wide range of industry issues and support the creation of a legislative framework that ensures fair competition in the media industry.
We believe that the newspaper industry plays a vital role in Irish society. Over 5.2 million newspapers are sold every week and a further 1.5m newspapers are distributed free of charge in Ireland.
In fact, four out of five adults in Ireland read a newspaper regularly, which means that we have one of the highest rates of newspaper readership in the developed world.
Furthermore, the industry makes a significant contribution as an employer. Over 4,000 people are employed on a full-time basis in the industry, including over 2,000 editorial staff. A large pool of freelance journalists also plays an important part in the newspaper industry and countless others work in industries that are closely aligned with newspapers.
We are committed to promoting newspaper media as the most comprehensive source of news and information, and as the most effective medium for advertising.
Some of the areas that we focus on are: press regulation, press standards, environmental issues, taxation, advertising promotion and readership. Find out more about what we do here.
